We offer Bike Mechanics 1 and 2 classes (2 week and 6 week course, respectively) at our shop in Rogers Park as well as occasional 1-session topical classes, like Fix a Flat or Winterize Your Bike.

We also offer an array of off-site educational programs in partnership with libraries, schools, clubs, and more, ranging from Learn-to-Ride to Mobile Open Shop, and everything in between!

Over two sessions, our seasoned Recyclery mechanics instructors introduce you to basic bicycle maintenance. We will cover tool and component terminology, fixing a flat, chain maintenance, brake adjustment, and basic shifting adjustments.

Please note:

  • Students may work on their own personal bikes, or a loaner bike provided by the Recyclery.
  • This course will discuss “tubeless” tire setups, but students with tubeless setups will be provided a project bike to participate fully in fixing a flat with inner tubes.
  • We do not have space for storage in between classes, so please plan to bring your personal bike home with you after each session.
  • If you are already familiar with the basics and want to learn more advanced mechanic skills, we recommend taking the Bike Maintenance 2.
  • *Refunds will not be issued less than 1 full week before start date*

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at info@therecyclery.org 😃

Over six sessions, our seasoned Recyclery mechanics will walk you through how to disassemble, reassemble, and adjust all major mechanical systems of a bicycle in addition to answering any questions you have along the way! This class is intended for people with some bicycle knowledge already.

Please note:

  • This class is suitable for students with some prior bike mechanics experience. This includes confidently taking both wheels on and off, fixing a flat, and some general knowledge of the parts of a bike and what they do. If you are a beginner, we recommend Bike Maintenance 1.
  • We strongly recommend that you work on a loaner bike that belongs to the Recyclery. You may work on your own bike, but bearing in mind that bikes can have critical issues that are not apparent until disassembled, and that we cannot guarantee that your bike will be in rideable condition at the end of each class. This is, after all, a class about taking apart a bike!
  • We cannot, under any circumstances, store student bikes. If you choose to work on your own bike, please plan to bring your bike home after each class.
  • *Refunds will not be issued less than 1 full week before start date*

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at info@therecyclery.org 😄
